Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children Parking Garage - Wilmington, Delaware For the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, TimHaahs served as the prime design firm, providing full architectural and engineering design services for new garage on an existing employee lot. The garage contains five levels with 1,800 spaces and serves as the main parking area for the hospital. It was designed with a precast façade, and includes stone-like features, blending attractively with the rest of the campus. In addition, the area right outside the garage features a courtyard and covered canopy area to provide an inviting and peaceful place for those working at or visiting the hospital. The stair tower near the main entrance provides an image similar to the A.I. duPont monument on campus. TimHaahs developed a courtyard at the main elevator tower to provide an inviting space for employees. To provide a vibrant and attractive look, flags were installed on the exterior at the second and the top levels. The functional design for the open parking structure consists of a double-threaded helix centered between two flat bays. Traffic flow is one way with 9’0” wide stalls at an angle of 80 degrees. The parking facility was designed to beautifully blend in with the rest of the children’s hospital campus. The design helps to give the facility the warm, inviting, and playful atmosphere that a children’s hospital needs. Award: International Parking Award of Merit, 2008 Category II, International Parking Institute |
