Hamilton Square at the University of Pennsylvania - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania This mixed-use parking garage revitalized an entire downtown corridor, creating a “people place” for the University of Pennsylvania campus. The University of Pennsylvania is continuing to develop projects on its campus that will encourage students and employees to consider living on or around its campus. The development of Hamilton Square by the University is one of several projects to satisfy this goal. ![]() The Hamilton Square project incorporates several components including cinema/theater, retail stores, cafe/restaurant, and a mixed-use parking garage/supermarket. TimHaahs was responsible for the functional design layout, structural engineering, and parking access/revenue control specifications for the parking garage and supermarket. The principal architect was Wood and Zapata, Inc. of Boston, MA. ![]() The parking facility functional layout includes many challenges, providing a 20'-0" vertical speed ramp to clear the supermarket below, an upper-level shopping bag pick-up area, and one main entry/exit portal to accommodate an 800 vehicle parking garage. The final layout utilizes a one-way traffic system throughout with a speed ramp from grade to the parking floor above the supermarket. The entry/exit provides for two entry and three exit lanes. A pay-on-foot parking access and revenue control system is utilized. The parking garage, completed in 2001, is nine stories tall and measures approximately 168'-0" x 220'-0". |
