Middle Tennessee State University Parking Structure - Murfreesboro, Tennessee In 2008, for Middle Tennessee State University, Timhaahs prepared the conceptual design for the school’s first parking structure. Working with the local architect, Thomas Miller & Partners, TimHaahs developed a scheme that served as the foundation for a design-build competition. The parking structure consists of 800 spaces and will be built atop a surface parking lot adjacent to the MTSU Recreation Center. In addition, the parking structure will be directly across from a new Student Union, so the architectural design and massing of the parking deck was critical to its design. Using a three-bay, side by side helix concept, we created a design that is very user-friendly for both visitors and students alike. The parking structure complements the surrounding buildings and creates a wonderful sense of place for students and others that will visit the area. The parking structure also includes substantial occupied space on the ground floor, so special attention was paid to the waterproofing strategies for protecting the area and separating the vehicular traffic from the pedestrians. Using the design-build, fast track approach, it is anticipated that the project will be delivered in less than nine months.
