Reading Fourth and Cherry Streets Parking Expansion - Reading, Pennsylvania For the Reading Parking Authority, TimHaahs performed a feasibility study for the vertical expansion of an existing garage at Fourth and Cherry Streets. TimHaahs then provided full architectural and structural design services for the expansion of the garage. ![]() Originally built in 1971, the façade consisted of concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls with brick veneer. These were replaced with split-faced CMU walls during restoration work previously performed by TimHaahs. The two-level expansion adds 297 spaces to the existing facility, bringing the total number of spaces to 635. The functional flow remained as a one-way, single helix configuration with one lane in and two lanes out on the Cherry Street side. ![]() With a two-level expansion, retrofitting of the existing foundation was minimal, and the structural strengthening of the existing beam and column frames was more manageable than with a larger expansion. The new structure has the same structural framework as the existing, but uses normal weight concrete for better long term durability. TimHaahs replicated the existing renovated façade with upturned cast-in-place concrete bumper walls clad with splitface brick veneer. |
