University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Norfolk Expansion/Student Housing - Newark, New Jersey For the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)’s Norfolk Deck Expansion/Student Housing project, TimHaahs served as the structural engineer and parking consultant for a 14-story multi-use building, including retail space and a fitness center along the ground level, five stories of parking at the lower levels, and nine stories of apartments above. This 527 space parking facility provides parking for UMDNJ’s students and faculty and is connected to an existing parking structure on every level via two vehicular bridges. TimHaahs worked closely with Kitchen & Associates, the project architect, in developing the housing structure to best accommodate the parking below. TimHaahs faced numerous engineering challenges coordinating a precast Filigree system at the parking levels with a steel structure at the housing levels. The floor construction utilizes girder-slabs, an innovated structural system composed of composite steel and precast concrete. The exterior façade is comprised of a Titan wall panel system. Awards: Outstanding Project Award, 2007 Excellence in Structural Engineering, Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers |
