University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Norfolk Expansion/Student Housing - Newark, New Jersey For the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), TimHaahs served as the structural engineer and parking consultant for the Norfolk Deck Expansion/Student Housing project. The 14-story, multi-use building includes retail space and a fitness center along the ground level, five stories of parking at the lower levels, and nine stories of apartments above. ![]() This 527-space parking facility provides parking for UMDNJ’s students and faculty, and is connected to an existing parking structure on every level via two vehicular bridges. TimHaahs worked closely with Kitchen & Associates, the project architect, in developing the housing structure to best accommodate the parking below. TimHaahs faced numerous engineering challenges in coordinating a precast Filigree system at the parking levels with a steel structure at the housing levels. The floor construction utilizes girder-slabs, an innovated structural system composed of composite steel and precast concrete. The exterior façade is comprised of a Titan wall panel system. ![]() Award: Outstanding Project Award, 2007 Excellence in Structural Engineering, Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers |
