Union Station Parking Expansion - Washington, D.C. In 2002 the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation commissioned TimHaahs to explore the feasibility of adding additional parking via horizontal expansion over the existing bus deck. The study focused on redefining the circulation pattern to better serve various user groups and adding additional lanes to decrease exit time. In 2004 TimHaahs performed design services for approximately 1000 spaces by adding five levels of a cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete structural system, increasing the garage capacity to 2500 spaces. Working with RTKL Associates, TimHaahs made presentations to the District of Columbia Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission to ensure that the goals of the District’s long-term master plan were met. Union Station is Amtrak’s third busiest station. In addition to accommodating Amtrak trains, it also serves as a hub for Maryland’s commuter rail service (MARC), Washington’s Metro Rail system, taxis and intercity buses. The station features many upscale shops, restaurants, and an extensive food court. |
