Union Station Parking Structure Restoration - Washington, DC For the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation (USRC), TimHaahs performed restoration services to restore the parking structure at Historic Union Station in Washington, DC. The structure was in need of a significant upgrade because of its age, and to accommodate an ambitious expansion program which was functionally dependent upon the existing structure. Analysis of the existing structure showed that without repairs and preventative maintenance, its service life would only be ten years. However, with the repairs and preventative maintenance recommended by TimHaahs, this was increased to 30 years. TimHaahs’ recommendations included adding supplemental drainage to help prevent water ponding, repair or replacement of all failed expansion joints, and the application of migrating corrosion inhibitors and 100% silane sealers every seven years. Additionally, at areas where high chloride concentration was detected, application of migrating corrosion inhibitors and traffic deck membranes was suggested. Union Station is Amtrak’s third busiest station. In addition to accommodating Amtrak trains, it also serves as a hub for Maryland’s commuter rail service (MARC), Washington’s Metro Rail system, taxis and intercity buses. The station features many upscale shops, restaurants, and an extensive food court.
