University Avenue Parking Structure - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Principals of TimHaahs have been providing the University of Pennsylvania with parking consulting and parking structure design services for approximately 20 years. In the latter part of the 1990’s, TimHaahs worked closely with the University to develop parking structure concepts for future facilities. ![]() In 1999 TimHaahs was commissioned to design the University Avenue parking garage. The site, adjacent to the previous location of the Philadelphia Civic Center, is considered a major gateway to the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The facility is ten-levels, utilizing a prestressed, precast concrete system, providing 1983 spaces for both institutions. The exterior facade features a curved stainless steel grille. The design is a double-threaded helix ramping system allowing for rapid one-way vertical travel. To maximize the boundaries of the property, the structure is designed with a four bay, grid column system. The site also presented another challenge – the structure had to be designed around existing Amtrak rail lines, resulting in the curvilinear facility. TimHaahs provided project management, parking consultation, and structural engineering, while Ewing Cole Cherry Brott of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, provided architectural design. |
