Veteran’s Affairs Garage - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania For the U. S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs in Pittsburgh, PA, TimHaahs provided prime architectural and engineering design services for an approximately 1500-space parking structure. Working with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs and P.J. Dick (the Construction Manager), TimHaahs was part of the design-build team for this critical infrastructure project. ![]() The project consists of two adjoining parking structures. One is a nine level structure measuring approximately 190’ x 287’; the other is a three-level structure, approximately 108’ x 214’. An elevation core with four traction elevators serves as the main pedestrian mode of circulation. A two-level connector lobby is attached to the elevator core to allow staff and visitors to enter the hospital directly via the garage. TimHaahs designed the garage structures using a cast-in-place, post-tensioned construction system. TimHaahs incorporated an earth retention system using soldier piles, tie backs, and timber lagging for the terraced site. The challenging site required incorporating an elevation change of 35 feet over a distance of only 300 feet into the design. ![]() TimHaahs was instrumental in the design of additional security provisions for the garage, which is a federal facility. The design includes force protection to secure the hospital in case of any forceful damage from the garage structure.
